In Vessel Facility

In-Vessel Composting

Household food and garden waste is composted at one of our enclosed In-Vessel Composting (IVC) facilities in Greater Manchester.  These are located at:

  • Bredbury Parkway, Stockport
  • Salford Road, Over Hulton, Bolton
  • Trafford Park, Nash Road, Trafford

IVC is a system which harnesses the natural composting process, to recycle organic waste into a quality compost product, which can then used in horticulture and agriculture as a soil improver.

The compost product from the IVCs is then blended, matured and bagged at a separate compost processing facility and sold as Revive® Multi- Purpose Compost. Revive Compost  is available for residents to buy directly from one of our weighbridge facilities in Greater Manchester.

The IVC process uses a natural composting method for organic waste which comprises of the following stages:

Contaminants such as plastic and metals are removed.

The waste is shredded to ensure the mixture has the right proportions of food and garden waste. Air is pumped in to aid aerobic decomposition.   A loader shovel is used to move the organic waste onto a conveyor belt. Each day the silos (composting cages) are topped up with new organic waste by the conveyor.

In-Vessel Composting

Across the next 10 to 14 days the organic waste works its way down the silos. It is required to reach a minimum of 65 Celsius around day four to destroy all the harmful bacteria, weed seeds, and to accelerate the composting process. The temperature inside the cages is carefully monitored and recorded.

The compost is taken into the maturation hall to mature for six weeks.

Quality Control

Rigorous sampling and testing procedures are conducted  including certification to BSI PAS100 and the Compost Quality Protocol. The product is then screened to remove any impurities and stored prior to dispatch.
